The Sea-Ports in Bangladesh

In Bangladesh, there are now Four (04) Sea-Ports, namely –

  • Chittagong Port (Chittagong)
  • Mongla Port (Khulna)
  • Payra Port (Patuakhali, Barisal)
  • Matarbari Deep-Sea Port (Matarbari, Chittagong)
Among all the aforementioned Sea-Ports, the Chittagong Port is the main Sea-Port which handles over Ninety-Two percent (92%) Export-Import Trade Volume of the country, while in terms of Containerized Cargo, it is Ninety-Eight percent (98%) alongside.

The Chittagong Port

The Chittagong Port is the main Sea-Port of Bangladesh located in Chittagong City (the Port City of Bangladesh) on the vibrant estuary of the mighty Karnaphuli River and is around 11 Km from the Bay of Bengal (The North-Eastern Part of the Indian Ocean). It is one of the oldest Sea-Ports in the world and made its debut before the 02ND century CE (CE - Common Era).


In the 02ND century CE, Claudius Ptolemy, the Greco-Roman Cartographer encrypted the name of the Chittagong Port (Chittagong Harbor) in his map (The Ptolemy World Map) as well as in his book Geography (written in Circa 150) and mentioned the Sea-Port as one of the finest harbors in the Eastern World. Traders and Merchants from different parts of the ancient world, like - Rome, Arabia, Persia (Iran), Dutch (the Netherlands), China, Morocco, Portugal, and England utilized this Sea-Port for securing their trade among erstwhile Africa, Europe, China, and South-East Asia.


The modern Chittagong Port was organized in 1887 under the Port Commissioners Act in the British Indian Colonial Regime and commenced its modern and formal operations under the British Commissioner in 1888. Ti is now operated under the ‘Chittagong Port Authority Ordinance 1976’ [(Ordinance No. LII of 1976), which was published on July 7; 1976 (Amended 1995)] by the 'Chittagong Port Authority' (CPA) under the direct supervision of the 'Ministry of Shipping, Government of the people's republic of Bangladesh' According to Lloyd's Listing 2022, in terms of container handling, the Chittagong Port is the 64TH busiest port among the top 100 ports across the world.

  • Vessel Operating (Berthing) Capacity at a time – 17 Vessels (including 12 Container Vessels)
  • Average Port Stay time for Ocean Going Vessel – 66.24 Hours (2.76 Days)
Terminals (Berths) of the Chittagong Port

There are four (04) different terminal (Berth) Zones of the 'Chittagong Port Authority' (CPA) –

  • The General Cargo Berth Zone (GCB Zone) which is operated by the 'Chittagong Port Authority' itself
  • The Patenga Container Terminal Zone (PCT Zone) which is operated under Public Private Partnership (PPP)
  • The New-Mooring Container Terminal Zone (NCT Zone) which is operated under Public Private Partnership (PPP)
  • The Chittagong Container Terminal Zone (CCT Zone) which is operated under Public Private Partnership (PPP)
Besides these four (04) Different Terminal (Berth) Zones, there are three (03) different 'Vessel Repair Terminals' (Berths), eight (08) different 'Mooring Terminals' (Berths), and eleven (11) different 'Bulk Specialized Terminals' (Berths) are operational under the 'Chittagong Port Authority' (CPA)

The General Cargo Berth Zone (GCB Zone)
  • There are twelve (12) different terminals (berths) under the ‘General Cargo Berth Zone’ (GCB Zone) [from GCB-01 to GCB-12] which are operated by the 'Chittagong Port Authority' (CPA) itself.
  • The GCB-06, GCB-08, GCB-09, GCB-10, GCB-11, and GCB-12 are exclusively operated for container vessel operations while the remaining berths of GCB are used for operating other Cargo Vessels.
  • Only the Geared Vessels can take berth at the General Cargo Berth Zone (GCB Zone).
The Chittagong Container Terminal Zone (CCT Zone)
  • There are three (03) different terminals (berths) under the ‘Chittagong Container Terminal Zone’ (CCT Zone) [from CCT-01 to CCT-03] which are operated by the 'Chittagong Port Authority' (CPA) and ‘Saif Powertec Limited’ under the ‘Public Private Partnership’ (PPP) agreement.
  •  The Chittagong Container Terminal Zone (CCT Zone) is designed for operating both Geared Vessels and Gear-Less Vessels.
The New-Mooring Container Terminal Zone (NCT Zone)
  • There are five (05) different terminals (berths) under the ‘New-Mooring Container Terminal Zone’ (NCT Zone) [from NCT-01 to NCT-05] which are operated by the 'Chittagong Port Authority' (CPA) and ‘Saif Powertec Limited’ under the ‘Public Private Partnership’ (PPP) agreement.
  • The NCT-01, NCT-02, NCT-03, and NCT-05 are exclusively operated for container vessel operations while the NCT-04 is usually used for operating other cargo vessels alongside.
  • The ‘New-Mooring Container Terminal Zone’ (NCT Zone) is designed for operating both Geared Vessels and Gear-Less Vessels.
The Patenga Container Terminal Zone (PCT Zone)
  • There are three (03) different terminals (Berths) under the ‘Patenga Container Terminal Zone’ (PCT Zone) [from PCT-01 to PCT-03] which are operated by the 'Chittagong Port Authority' (CPA) and the ‘Red-Sea Gateway Terminal Bangladesh Limited’ (SISCO Holding) under ‘Public Private Partnership’ (PPP) agreement.
  • The ‘Patenga Container Terminal Zone’ (PCT Zone) is also designed for operating both Geared Vessels and Gear-Less Vessels

There are two (02) different extended Portfolios available under the 'Chittagong Port Authority' (CPA) which are namely –
  • The 'Inland Container Depot, Kamalapur, Dhaka' (ICD, Kamalapur, Dhaka)
  • The 'Inland Container Terminal, Pangaon, Dhaka' (ICT, Pangaon, Dhaka)
The 'Inland Container Depot, Kamalapur, Dhaka' (ICD, Kamalapur, Dhaka)

The 'Inland Container Depot, Kamalapur, Dhaka' (ICD, Kamalapur, Dhaka) is the extended port facility of the 'Chittagong Port Authority' (CPA) for containerized cargo movement to Dhaka through Rail Transportation. It has been operational since 1987 to serve the country’s vibrant Economic Zones which are remote to the Chittagong Port, located in Dhaka, and alongside regions located in the Eastern and Northern Parts of the country. The distance between the Chittagong Port to ICD, Kamalapur, Dhaka is about 248.5 km. The Annual Container Handling Capacity ICD, Kamalapur, Dhaka is 90,000 TEUs. The Bangladesh Railway (under the 'Ministry of Railways, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh’) with its 450 wagons is playing a pivotal role in ensuring the ceaseless connection between the Chittagong Port to the ICD, Kamalapur, Dhaka. The length of the Railway Terminal Tracks of the ICD, Kamalapur, Dhaka is 552.68 Meter. Each day approximately Three (03) Trains move between the Chittagong Port to the ICD, Kamalapur, Dhaka.

The 'Inland Container Terminal, Pangaon, Dhaka' (ICT, Pangaon, Dhaka)

The 'Inland Container Terminal, Pangaon, Dhaka' (ICT, Pangaon, Dhaka) is located on the bank of the mighty Buriganga River in Keraniganj Upazila of Dhaka District which is another extended port facility of the 'Chittagong Port Authority' (CPA) for the containerized cargo movement to Dhaka through inland water transport (IWT) system. The 'Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority' (BIWTA) and the 'Chittagong Port Authority' (CPA) jointly built this Inland Container Terminal in 2013. It had been built to ease the pressure of cargo and container movement on the Dhaka-Chittagong Railway and Highway corridors. The River Route distance of the Chittagong Port to the ICT, Pangaon, Dhaka is approximately 157 nautical miles. Shipping barges are being used by the 'Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority' (BIWTA) to move the cargo and containers from the Chittagong Port to the ICT, Pangaon, Dhaka.
